Water resources in Malaysia are primarily used for irrigation, potable watre supply, hydropower generation, navigation, fisheries, livestock farming, recreation, environment, and tourism. Hence, the importance of this natural resources should never be neglected. With rapid economic development taking place in Malaysia at present and envisioned to continue for the coming years, the goverment has taken the initiative to put forward an integrated and comprehensive plan for the management of major river basins to preserve and sustain this precious commodity. Pollution and degradation of the water quality in the rivers, compounded bby frequent and disastrous floods and droughts highlights the importance and urgency for an all-inclusive framework encompassing a multi-sectoral approach via an Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM).
